Inspiring Students in the Classroom
Metro United Way and Global Game Changers are collaborating to provide a sustainable, high quality in-school learning program that will have a lifelong impact and benefit the most underserved at-risk children in the Louisville community.
The School of Philanthropy teaches students about the value of giving back and making the world a better place as part of their normal school day. Led by Metro United Way volunteers, the program strives to provide teachers a tool to distinguish student gifts and hone student emotional skills while providing them with the support that they need.
Through project based learning, class activities consist of engaging and enriching Common Core-compliant lessons, presentations by guest speakers, and opportunities for the kids to participate in community engagement. GGC lesson plans and materials promote in-depth explorations into compassion, civic engagement and social-emotional learning, as well as self-compassion, mindfulness and nutrition.
Wheatley Elementary: Pilot School of Philanthropy
The program’s pilot school for the 2015-2016 school year is Wheatley Elementary, located in Louisville’s West End. Embracing the values of philanthropy and helping others, this school is hoping to change the trajectories of its students and to provide them a more optimistic understanding of what might be possible through the use of their talents and hearts.
